كريمَ السجايا فيه معْ بعده قرْبُ
Islam has indeed lost an outstanding scholar,
Islam has lost an outstanding scholar,
Noble of character, in whom there was nearness despite his remoteness.
Noble in character, though gone from us still feels near.
عجبتُI marvelled وقدand indeed دارتْturned رحىthe millstone of العلمِlearning بعدهafter him
عجبتُ وقد دارتْ رحى العلمِ بعده
وهلand is there للرحىfor the millstone دورٌa turning وقدand indeed عدمَhas been lost القطبُthe spindle
وهل للرحى دورٌ وقد عدمَ القطبُ
I marvelled that the millstone of learning turned after him—
I'm astonished, though the mill of knowledge still turns,
And can the millstone turn when its spindle has been lost?
Can the mill keep spinning when the axle is no longer here?
