In love, I am content with little:
I am content in love with little,
a visiting apparition, or a false promise.
With an imagination that visits, or a false promise.

What is it with Hind? Whenever I seek her favor,
What fault of Hind, if I sought her pleasure,
she startles me with the sputter of a stricken chest.
And she surprised me with a frown?

Have you hated me for a fault, or for suspicion,
Was it for a defect she disliked me, or suspicion?
or for gray hair? She said it was the last:
Or was it for gray hair, she said to it, “Enough!”

And dawn chases away the full moons.

I said gray hair is light, but she said,
‘I want depilatory lime for that light.’
“I desire a lamp for that light.”

I said there is no merit in the blackness of hair
in our eyes, except the color of the minister's ink.’
Except for us, unlike the color of the minister’s sacrifice.

You have a radiant, splendid, peerless face,
You have a face, proud and unique,
like the minister's age among all ages.
Like the era of the minister between eras.

My only occupation is your love, and my praise

Of him - these two are my garden and brook.

And if the one who rebels against you cramps my chest,
my praise of him brings healing to troubled breasts.
Then my praise of him is the cure for my chest.

Everything will pass away except my love
for you and praise of the great minister.
For you and praise of the great minister.

How often my tears, flowing at your desertion, have mirrored
How many tears have I shed from your estrangement that tell
the flood of seas in the minister's gifts.
Of the minister’s gifts, a flood of seas.

Were it not for loving you, I would have guarded my tears
Were it not for your love, I would have guarded my tears
as the minister guards his faith from what is forbidden.
Like guarding the minister’s religion from sin.

My tears are for you, and the dew of my hand
have shamed the downpour of the rain-heavy clouds.
Is shyer than abundant pouring rain.

And if I was wrong in loving you,
then praise of the minister is like atonement.
Then praise of the minister is like atonement.

No—by my long vigil for you and my longing—
No, and my persistence in loving you, my passion,
the minister's bounty has no shortcoming.
Is no less than the minister’s persistence.

How can I dare to kiss your mouth, O Hind,
Hind, when the minister's custom is to seal the frontier breaches?
When the minister’s way is to close all breaches?

Like his character, without corruption.

I swear I have no patience to forgo your love—
I have no patience to abstain from your love,
no, nor the worthy praise of him.
Or abstain from praising the blessed minister.

I am needy for your affection, as people
people need the minister's continued life.
Are needy for the minister to remain.

I have an eyelid, and the minister a banner:
My eyelid and the minister’s banner
they are named al-Saffah, ‘the Blood-Shedder,’ and al-Mansur, ‘the Victorious.’
Were both called licentious and victorious.

Many a night I stayed awake for you until
a dawn shone like his radiance—what radiance!
Dawn appeared whose light is the greatest light.

Unable to carry the burden.

Do not, at your whim, abase my defiance
Do not humiliate me for my stubbornness in loving you,
before my foes; as for the minister, he is my champion.
As for enemies, the minister is my ally.

My longing for you, O Hind, is mighty,
In you, O Hind, is my passion, great
like the minister's longing for extravagant spending.
As the minister’s passion for generosity.

And if there is any deficiency in your love,
then praising the minister completes my joy.
My praise of the minister completes my joy.

It is a gaze whose languor is full of enchantment;
It is a gaze whose lassitude has much mischief,
I would ransom the minister from that languor.
I sacrifice the minister for that languor.

It mimics his outstretched banner.

We seek refuge in his victorious sword.

It is more beautiful than his eloquent words.

We say it is like his swift spear.

In loving her from his esteemed character.
