ناديتُI called to دُمْلَجَهاher armlet فديتُكَmay I be your ransom دُمْلَجاًO armlet
ناديتُ دُمْلَجَها فديتُكَ دُمْلَجاً
لاdo not تجرحنَّwound (emphatically) يداًa hand لهاto it عنديwith me يدُa favor
لا تجرحنَّ يداً لها عندي يدُ
I called to her armlet: “May I be your ransom, O armlet!
I called out to her who was wrapped in darkness, I would give my life for you, oh shrouded one,
Do not wound a hand that has shown me kindness.”
Do not wound a hand that is dear to me,
فأجابنيso it answered me أناI دُملجٌan armlet ذوpossessing غلظةٍhardness
فأجابني أنا دُملجٌ ذو غلظةٍ
إنيindeed I أرقُّfeel tenderness لهاfor her وقلبيand my heart جلمدُhard stone
إني أرقُّ لها وقلبي جلمدُ
So it answered me: “I am a hard armlet;
He replied to me, I am rough darkness,
I feel tenderness for her, though my heart is stone.”
Though for her I am tender, my heart is frozen stone
