Hama, since our sheikh departed from her—

Since our sheikh left Hama

the Orontes has perpetrated a monstrous falsehood there.

The transgressor has greatly abused it

صرتُ كمن ينظرُها بلقعاً

I have become like one who sees her as a barren waste,
