بنيsons of عمَّناour paternal uncle لاmay ... not عدمناكمْwe lose you
وإنْand although لمْnot تقرَّfind delight بكمْin you قطُّever عَيْنَاan eye
Cousins, may we never be bereft of you—
Sons of our uncle, may we never lose you,
though never once has an eye found comfort in you.
Though no eye has ever found delight in you.
بَنَيْناwe built لأنفسِناfor ourselves رفعةًhigh standing
فنلتمْand so you attained مآربَaims مماfrom what بَنَيْناwe built
We built ourselves a lofty standing,
We built high standing for ourselves,
and you attained your aims from what we built.
And you attained your aims from what we built.
ألاwill ... not? تنظرونَyou look إليناtoward us فمذْfor since
نظرتمْyou were noticed بناthrough us ماnot نظرتُمْyou looked إليناtoward us
Will you not look toward us? For ever since
Will you not look toward us? For since
you rose through us, you have never looked our way.
You gained notice through us, you have not looked toward us.
عجبْناwe marveled لقلةِat the scantness of إنصافكمyour fairness
كبرتُمْyou grew great بناthrough us فكبرتمand then you grew haughty عليناtoward us
We marveled at your lack of fairness:
We marveled at how little fairness you showed:
through us you grew great, then grew arrogant toward us.
You grew great through us, then grew haughty toward us.
