كنْbe مِنْamong أوليpossessors of العلمِknowledge ولوeven if خاملاًobscure
كنْ مِنْ أولي العلمِ ولو خاملاً
وارضَand be content بماwith what يقسمُهُallots it الرازقُthe Provider
وارضَ بما يقسمُهُ الرازقُ
Be among the learned, even if obscure,
Be one of those with knowledge, even if dormant,
And be content with what the Provider allots.
And be content with what the Sustainer has apportioned.
لئنْif indeed يقولواthey say عالمٌa scholar كاسدٌin no demand
لئنْ يقولوا عالمٌ كاسدٌ
ولاand not يقولواthey say جاهلٌan ignoramus نافقin demand
ولا يقولوا جاهلٌ نافق
Better they say, “A scholar in no demand,”
Lest they say, “A faded scholar,”
Than say, “An ignoramus in demand.”
And lest they say, “An ignorant hypocrite."
