وخطيبٍ تظنُّهُ

وخطيبٍ تظنُّهُ

فائزاً وَهْوَ هالِكْ

فائزاً وَهْوَ هالِكْ

And many a preacher you deem

A speaker you think victorious

successful, though he is doomed;

Though in truth he is lost

فَهْوَ في الماءِ ناسكٌ

فَهْوَ في الماءِ ناسكٌ

وَهْوَ في المالِ فاتِكْ

وَهْوَ في المالِ فاتِكْ

for with water he is an ascetic,

In water devout yet indulgent

but with money he is ruthless.

In wealth wasteful and defeated
