إمامٌa prayer leader فيin الركوعِbowing حكىresembled هلالاًa crescent moon
إمامٌ في الركوعِ حكى هلالاً
ولكنْbut فيin اعتدالٍstanding upright كالقضيبِlike a slender branch
ولكنْ في اعتدالٍ كالقضيبِ
An imam, in bowing, resembled a crescent;
A prayer leader, in bowing, resembled a crescent moon,
but standing upright, he was like a slender bough.

وقالand he said تلوتُI recited; I followed قلتُI said البدرَthe full moon حسناًin beauty
وقال تلوتُ قلتُ البدرَ حسناً
وقالand he said ختمتُI finished; I sealed قلتُI said علىupon القلوبِthe hearts
وقال ختمتُ قلتُ على القلوبِ
He said, “I recited.” I replied, “The full moon—in beauty.”
And he said, “I recited”; I said, “[You followed] the full moon in beauty.”
He said, “I finished.” I replied, “Upon the hearts.”
And he said, “I finished”; I said, “[You set a seal] upon hearts.”
