ألا يا دهرُ دعني في خمولي

ألا يا دهرُ دعني في خمولي

فملبسيَ النباهةُ والنزاههْ

فملبسيَ النباهةُ والنزاههْ

Ah, O Time, leave me in my obscurity;

Oh time, leave me to my tranquility,

for my garb is distinction and integrity.

for my garb is integrity and probity.

وعاضدْ كلَّ ذي عيبٍ وريبٍ

وعاضدْ كلَّ ذي عيبٍ وريبٍ

بعرضِ الشخصِ منهُ ألفُ عاههْ

بعرضِ الشخصِ منهُ ألفُ عاههْ

And support every man of fault and suspicion;

I support everyone with faults and doubts,

each such man's honor bears a thousand blemishes.

with my self I cover a thousand naked ones.

إذا كانتْ وَجَاهتهمْ بإثمٍ

إذا كانتْ وَجَاهتهمْ بإثمٍ

ففي تركِ الوجاهةِ لي وَجاهَهْ

ففي تركِ الوجاهةِ لي وَجاهَهْ

If their prestige comes through sin,

If their prominence is with sin,

then in renouncing prestige lies prestige for me.

then in leaving prominence is my prominence.
