A spring encampment, bereft of Salma's company, grew desolate;
A square of Anas's affection has become desolate
it left the malady buried within my breast.
It left the sickness buried in the bushes
صبَّpoured دمعَthe tears الصبِّof the lovelorn one فيهin it عندماblood-red dye

It poured the lovelorn one's tears there as blood-red dye,
It poured the tears of sorrow in it when
when my Lord carried out what He willed.
When my Lord did what He willed
إنْif يملْinclines قلبيmy heart لعذلٍto reproach لاmay there be no لعاًrecovery after a fall
أوor أطاعَheeded السمعَhearing لوماًblame طرشاmay it go deaf
If my heart inclines to reproach, may it never recover;
If my heart gets bored of blaming, not of blaming
or if my hearing heeds blame, may it go deaf.
Or my hearing obeyed unfair blame
ياO لَسلمىSalma, appealed to أنتِyou أولىmost worthy مَنْone who رعىcherished

O Salma, you are the worthiest to cherish
O Salma, you are the first who grazed
my age-old love, from the day it first arose.
My oldest love since the day it grew

O Salma, may my father and I be your ransom!
O Salma, by my father you are me
Today, to me, you are the sweetest of all who walk.
Today you are to me the sweetest who walked
ياO لَسلمىSalma, appealed to سالمينيmake peace with me وأسلميand be safe

O Salma, make peace with me, and be safe;
O Salma, bid me safety and be safe
do not heed a talebearer in the tales he tells.
Do not obey a slanderer in what he alleged
ياO لَسلمىSalma, appealed to دهشتيmy bewilderment فيكover you حجاwisdom
لاnot يعابُis blamed الصبُّthe lovelorn one مهماhowever much دُهشاhe is bewildered
O Salma, my bewilderment over you is wisdom;
O Salma, my shock in you is an enchantment
the lovelorn one is not blamed, however bewildered he becomes.
The lover is not to be blamed no matter how shocked

What ails my eye, which weeps when you appear,
Why do my eyes shed tears if you appear
and my hand, which bends, trembling?
And my palm bends trembling

So unveil your face, if you will not join me;
So unveil your face if you do not pray
the sight of water dispels thirst.
Seeing water removes thirst

Indeed, if Salma pays me a single visit,
If Salma visits me rarely
she will find my cheek spread out as a carpet for her.
She found my cheek spread out for her

Or if she wants recompense for union,
Or she wanted compensation with reunion
then my whole self is but part of the bribes offered her.
I am all for her some flocking

She asked me for a witness to my slaying;
She asked me to witness her killing me
I said, “Your eyes—the sword suffices as a witness.”
I said your eyes are enough with the sword as a witness
