Of land and sea, of rugged heights,

yet gentle and level—her gillyflowers are her scattered blooms.

Joy is complete within her for whoever there

stays a day, just as her wall is complete.

And her palaces' hearts emptied and burst into laughter,

when her grateful one lived and her thankless one died.

Whoever settles in her gains union with her beloved,

and her Mount heals the wounded spirit within him.

She is nothing but this world's paradise; behold

her youths and her houris, unveiled before you.

So radiant, splendid, and dew-fresh are

her expanses, her gardens, and her palaces.

When her clouds wept for the loss of cares,

her flowers laughed, having lived in joy.

So her earth is fine silk, and through it

swords are unsheathed—and those swords are her rivers.

She is the seat of contentment's kingdom; for that

her curtains have been lowered to shut out cares.

Every kind of fragrance is gathered in her boughs,

and her perfume rises above fragrant musk.

Her fair, graceful women resemble her statues,

their glances holding her enchantment and languor.

No sweet, smooth-flowing water, fed by a downpour

late at night, just above her pool's gleaming pebbles,

then rid, through rubbing and a cleansing polish,

of its specks by the east wind and its passing,

is sweeter to taste than their lips, when

they smile, revealing pearls whose full moons shine.

Those mouths and the tears of their lover have

resembled necklaces cradled against her bosoms.

How many full-breasted maidens of the Franks were in her—

female themselves, yet with glances that were male!

And many a slender youth serves pure wine, as though

he were passing it round from his eyes and cheeks.

Is its fire in its cup, or is its cup

in its fire? Its light shines upon the dwellings.

The clapping of her obedient rebel, the Orontes, sets dancing

her branches, when her birds serenade him.

So her dwellings are guarded, and her slopes

are welcoming; her scroll is never rolled up.

Marvel, then, at a land as luminous as the sky,

whose suns and full moons have come to shine.

So her expanses smiled and breathed

fragrance; no fresh green bough is her equal.

With the white one, in her arena, I raced

Jilliq's chestnut one; then her secret lay hidden.
