Your noble lady, whom you sent as a gift, has arrived,

a beauty trailing the skirts of eloquence.

So the assembly yearned for her, and knee-bindings were loosened for her

by the masters of speech, proud lords and chieftains.

And she is the noble lady of Quraysh, who has won

a husband from the lofty station of honor.

So when I gained nearness to her, I attained

    a hope—and a wish—with which I filled both my hands.

And it was as though, when I heard her wondrous eloquence

and sipped from her wine cooled by the north wind,

I were a lovesick man whose home, with his loved ones, lay far away

for ages, and whose beloved had sent a messenger.

And I bestowed upon your hand, which granted me my wishes,

praise born of it, forever unbroken.
