Your noble lady, whom you sent as a gift, arrived,

a beauty trailing the skirts of eloquence.

The assembly thrilled to her, and for her the knee-bands were loosened

by the masters of speech, proud chiefs and princes.

And she, the noble lady of Quraysh, has won

a consort of lofty, honorable station.

So, when I gained closeness to her, I attained

a hope with which I filled both my hands, and a cherished wish.

And it was as though, when I heard her wondrous artistry

and sipped from her wine cooled by the north wind,

I were a lovesick man whose home, with his loved ones, lay far away

for ages, and whose beloved had sent a messenger.

And to a hand of yours that granted me my wishes I offered

praise born of it, forever unbroken.
