يَالَيْتَwould that شِعْرِيَmy knowledge هَلْwhether يُقْضَىbe granted تَأَلُّفُنَاour union
وَيثْنِيَand turn aside الشَّوْقُlonging عَنْfrom غَايَاتِهَhis aims الثَّانِيthe dissuader
Would that I knew: will our union be granted,
I wish I knew, will our affection be fulfilled
And will longing turn the dissuader from his aims?
And will yearning retreat from its other extremes?
أوْor هَلْwhether يَحِنُّshow tenderness عَلَىtoward نَفْسِيmy soul مُعَذِّبُهَاits tormentor
أوْor هَلْwhether يَرِقُّsoften لِقَلْبِيtoward my heart قَلبِيَmy heart الثَّانِيthe second
Or will my soul’s tormentor show it tenderness?
Or will my tormentor feel pity for my soul?
Or will my second heart soften toward my heart?
Or will my second heart soften for my heart?
