Why, despite my honor and exalted rank,

The greatness of my cities and the glory of my station,

Has passion made sport of my lifeblood and my heart?

How strange: the lion fears a spear's sharp point,

Yet I fear the glance of languid eyelids.

I have come to marvel at the ways of love:

I send my enemies a downpour of might,

And find death in war sweet and pleasant,

    And wrestle with terrors, unafraid

Of any but rejection and abandonment.

I hid my secret within my ribs, closely concealed,

Until my tears betrayed it and spoke.

And the arrow of a glance struck my heart when loosed,

And three women, like statues, possessed my soul,

Fair of face and soft of body.

From the dazzling splendors of curtained chambers they brought forth

Moons of beauty beneath black tresses,

    And unveiled faces like the unveiled dawn;

Like stars in the dark night, they appeared to a beholder

From above branches resting on dunes.

Each gazing with the two eyes of an oryx calf,

Proud in her jewels, with a swaggering gait,

Reaching out with a bending shoot of the ban tree.

This one is the crescent moon, and that one Jupiter's daughter

In beauty; and this one is sister to a ban-tree bough.

When I became tormented by my love for them,

And knew that I had found no escape,

Whenever I called my heart to forget, it refused.

I took my quarrel with forgetfulness over them before youth,

So it ruled for one sovereign against another.

How strange that eyelids, feeble in strength,

Left me hostage to sickness, without a cure!

Had love borne down upon a mountain, it would have fallen.

Do not reproach a king who has humbled himself to love:

Abasement in love is glory and a second kingship.

What ails me, while life's branch is tender and unwithered,

And the hand of separation does not approach our union,

That I fold my ribs around yearning and burning anguish?

If I do not obey love's authority concerning them,

Out of ardor for them, then I am not of Marwan's line.

    وَلَئِنْ نَحِلتُ ضَنىً وَذُبْتُ كَآبَهْ

    I surrendered to love willingly and devotedly;

And although I grew gaunt with sickness and melted away in grief,

Al-Walid had already fallen in love with Hababa before this.

What harm is there if I am their slave through yearning,

While the sons of the age, and they too, are among slaves?
