مَنْwho ذَاthis one يَعُدُّcounts فَضَائِلَvirtues الْفَشْتَالِيal-Fishtali
وَالدَّهْرُand Time كَاتِبُthe scribe of آيِهَاtheir verses وَالتَّالِيand the reciter
Who can number al-Fishtali’s virtues,
Who can recount the virtues of Al-Fushtālī,
While Time is the scribe of their verses and their reciter?
As time inscribes his signs, one after another.
عَلَمٌan eminent figure إِذَاwhen الْتَمَسُواthey sought الْفُنُونَthe arts فَعِلْمُهُthen his knowledge
مَرْعَىa pasture الْمُشِيحِthe diligent seeker وَنُجْعَةُand a rich grazing ground الْمُكْتَالِthe one taking grain by measure
An eminent figure—when they seek the arts, his knowledge
A flag, when they seek sciences, his knowledge,
Is pasture for the diligent and rich grazing for the measure-taker.
Is the pasture of revival and livelihood of the weary.
نَالَhe attained الّتِيthat which لاَno فَوْقَهاabove it مِنْany رِفْعَةٍeminence
مَاnot أَمَّلَتْهَاhoped for it حِيلَةُthe cunning of الْمُحْتَالِthe schemer
He attained an eminence with none above it,
He attained the elevation, above which there is no loftier,
One no schemer’s cunning ever hoped to reach.
That no strategem of the schemer has hoped for.
وَقَضَىand established قِيَاسُthe syllogism of تُرَاثِهِhis inheritance عَنْfrom جَدِّهِhis grandfather
أَنَّthat الْمُقَدَّمَthe antecedent فِيهِin it عَيْنُthe very same as الْتَّالِيthe consequent
And the syllogism of his inheritance from his grandfather proved
And the assessment of his heritage from his ancestors
That in it the antecedent is the consequent itself.
Showed that the best among them is the latter one.
