عنْدَماwhen لاحَتْappeared بعَيْنيin my eye بَرَدَهْa hailstone
قصَدَintended الوقْتُtime بِهاby it ماwhat قَصَدَهْintended it
When a hailstone appeared in my eye,
When her coldness caught my eye,
Time intended by it what it intended.
Time meant by it what it meant.
قلْتُI said ياO قوْمُpeople حَصاةٌa pebble قُذِفَتْwas hurled
شَرَدَdrove away النّوْمُsleep بِهاwith it مَنْwhoever شَرَدَهْdrove it away
I said: O people, a pebble has been hurled;
I said, "O people, a pebble was cast,
whoever drove sleep away drove it away with it.
By it sleep was disturbed, whoever it disturbed."
حامَcircled سِرْبُflock النّوْمِof sleep للوِرْدِfor a drink بهِat it
ثَمّthere لمّاwhen طُرِحَتْwas thrown ماdid not وَرَدَهْcame to drink at it
The flock of sleep circled about it, seeking a drink;
The flock of sleep hovered over the roses,
there, when the pebble was thrown, the flock did not come to drink at it.
Then when it was cast off, it missed what it sought.
