the blush of cheeks and the hue of pupils?

on earth no refuge and no protector.

why did you not stay, if only for a milking's pause?

there would be no day of reunion after your departure!

in what remains of the brimming cup you drank?

weeping blood for you as you deserve,

and have been arrested by shock, then our hearts

have taken on every duty of the eyes' corners.

weeping over you in a glistening downpour.

And may blessedness from God enfold you,

lifting your soul to the exalted abode.

Patience, sons of al-Jabbab: your departed one

will be gladdened on arrival by what awaits him.

And when sorrow's blaze scorches the hearts,

then patience and submission—what a sheltering canopy!
