لوْif لمْnot يكُنْbe واديكُمُyour valley بارداًcold
لوْ لمْ يكُنْ واديكُمُ بارداً
لَقُلْتُI would say منْfrom دَمْعيmy tears أتىcame الواديthe valley
لَقُلْتُ منْ دَمْعي أتى الوادي
Were your valley not cold,
If your valley were not so cold
I would say the valley came from my tears.
I would have said my tears made the valley flow
أوor لمْnot يَكُbe الشّاديthe singer بهِin it أعْجَماًwithout intelligible speech
أو لمْ يَكُ الشّادي بهِ أعْجَماً
طارَحْتُI would share شجْويmy sorrow طيْرَهُits bird الشّاديthe singing one
طارَحْتُ شجْوي طيْرَهُ الشّادي
Or were the singer there not without intelligible speech,
Or if the river had not been so strange
I would share my sorrow with its singing bird.
I would have set my longing free, a bird over the river
