We passed around, as the horizon’s light had cleft the expanse,

a wine of reproach between us, its relish contentment.

God bless the eyes of whoever saw us! And the rain had

a low-lying cloud that flashed across the horizons of gladness.

We flee to the justice of the time that has come,

and recover from the injustice of the time gone by.

And swiftly we heal the wounds of speech with speech—

so too a cup of tawny wine has healed and made ill.
