نَبيتُwe spend the night علىwith عِلْمٍknowledge يَقينٍcertain منof الدّهْرِtime
ونعْلَمُand we know أنّthat الخَلْقَcreation فيin قبْضَةِthe grasp of القَهْرِirresistible power
We pass our nights with certain knowledge of Time,
I grew up with certain knowledge of fate
and know that all creation lies in the grip of irresistible power.
And we know that destiny holds creation in its grip
ونرْكَنُand we trust للدُّنْياin this world اغْتِراراًbeing beguiled بلَهْوِهاby its amusements
وحسْبُكَand sufficient for you مَنْone who يرْجوhopes for الوَفاءَloyalty منَfrom الغَدْرِtreachery
Yet we trust in this world, beguiled by its amusements,
And we incline to the world, deceived by its vanity
and enough for you is one who hopes for loyalty from treachery.
Suffice it for one who hopes for loyalty from betrayal
ونَمْطُلُand we put off بالعزْمِwith resolve الزّمانَtime سَفاهةًfoolishly
فيوْمٌso a day الىto يومa day وشهْرٌand a month الىto شهْرِa month
And foolishly we keep Time waiting for our resolve:
And we waste time foolishly
one day added to another, and one month to another.
As day turns to day and month to month
ونُغْريand we entice بماwith what يَفْنىperishes المَطامِعَambitions والهَوىand desire
ونرْفُضُand we reject ماwhat يَبْقىendures فياso alas for ضيْعَةَthe waste of العُمْرlife
We entice our ambitions and desires with what perishes,
And we are tempted by what perishes, passions and desires
and reject what endures—alas for a lifetime wasted!
And we reject what remains, oh what a waste of life
وندْفَعُand we deliver أحْباباًloved ones كِرامًاnoble الىto الرّدىdeath
ونسْلوand we forget ونلْهوand we amuse ourselves بعْدَafter ذاكَthat عنِaway from الأمْرِthe matter
We deliver noble loved ones to death,
And we drive away honorable, noble loved ones to demise
and afterward forget and amuse ourselves, turning away from the matter.
Then we joke and play, unconcerned after that
هوَit is الدّهْرُtime لاnot يَبْقىremains علىthrough حَدَثانِهِits vicissitudes

Such is Time: through its vicissitudes nothing remains
Such is time, it leaves nothing of its news
new, nor is it ever free of a dreadful event.
Ever renewing, never free of strange events
وبيْنَand among الخُطوبِcalamities الطّارِقاتِthat strike suddenly تَفاضُلٌdifferences in degree

And the calamities that strike differ in degree,
And between impending disasters, there are differences
according to the lofty standing of those they strike down.
Like the difference of one taken in the prime of glory
ألَمْhave you not ترَseen أنّthat المجْدَglory أقْوَتhave become deserted رُبوعُهُits dwellings

Have you not seen that glory's dwellings lie deserted,
Have you not seen that glory loudest winds have stilled
and every green bough of its spreading trees has withered?
And the beautiful has changed on the face of the eminent
ولاحَتْand appeared علىupon وجْهِthe face of العَلاءِeminence كآبةٌsorrow

Sorrow has appeared upon the face of eminence,
And gloom appeared on the face of the prominent
so it frowned after its smiles and cheer.
After cheerfulness and glad tidings

O our greatest lady, our faithfulness to you is that we
Our greatest consolation, your loyalty, we
have turned to grief, renouncing the habit of patience.
Have endured to melancholy from moral strength

We have lost you—may eyes never lose their light—
We lost you, not just the eyes lost their light
and you were a light for us, illuminating those who travel by night.
You were a light that illuminated the traveller's path

I marveled at death, the stealthy slayer—how was it not awed
I wondered at fate's killer, how he was not deterred
by your abode, surrounded by prohibition and command?
From your abode, surrounded by prohibitions and commands

And how did the stroke of death advance with firm intent
And how the vicissitudes of time were determined
through white sword-blades and brown spear-shafts?
To breach the white castle and the brown spear

There were dense veils of steadfast faith,
Ramparts of firm religion, so many shields for the kingdom and glory
and how many veils of kingship and might stood before them!
We prepare the lofty spears and arrows
نعِدُّwe prepare الرِّماحَthe spears المشْرَفيّةMashrafi والقَنىand the lances

We prepare the Mashrafi spears and the lances,
And the command of God comes from where we know not
yet God's decree comes knocking from where we do not know.
Such is time, its rule advances in the wilderness

Such is Time: its rule prevails throughout creation,
The glory of wealth is the same as the humiliation of poverty
so wealth's honor or poverty's humiliation make no difference.

His followers had no aid in that ordeal
help for his followers in that calamity.

And through its reversals it laid Anushirwan, Kisra, low,
Stripped bare, and left no palace for Caesar
broken, and left Caesar no palace.

Truly, Islam and its people have been bereaved of you,
For losing a famous provision of well-known mention
a treasure renowned far and wide, whose name was celebrated,
And a singular one who surpassed the women of her time

As she excelled the like of her, the Night of Power
as the Night of Decree surpassed its peers.

Has feminine gender lowered the sun's rank,
Or did masculinity raise the status of the full moon?
and has masculine gender raised the full moon's rank?

To shelter the anguished, aid the oppressed
in sheltering the distressed and aiding those in dire need.

I see that return is hoped for from a journey in this world.
Return your gaze to the palace of the kingdom
Even if just an illusion that passes

Grant the royal palace another glance from you,
For in it is many a heart throbbing for your absence
even through a visit from the phantom that travels by night.
And much burning anguish and flowing tears
فكَمْfor how many فيهِin it منof قلْبٍa heart لبُعْدِكat your absence خافِقٍthrobbing

For how many hearts within it throb at your absence,
And a group, whose unity was torn by the hand of longing
and how much anguish is kindled, how many tears flow!
And a beautiful sight, changed by the hand of fate
وشمْلٍand a gathering جميعٍunited فرّقَتْهُscattered it يَدُthe hand of النّوىseparation

And a gathering once united has been scattered by the hand of separation,
And a position of power, its flanks made desolate
and a splendid scene has been changed by the hand of Time.
And the aura of a palace seen without a full moon
ومنْصِبُand the seat of مُلْكٍkingship أوْحَشَتْgrew desolate جَنَباتُهُits surroundings
وهالةand the halo of إيوانa palace hall تراءتappeared بلاwithout بدرa full moon
And the seat of kingship has grown desolate all around,
You were but the sun, the world lived by you
and a palace hall's halo appeared without a full moon.
At the height of glory or peak of destiny
وماand not كنتyou were إلاother than الشمسthe sun يحياlive بكthrough you الورىall people
علىdespite بُعدِthe remoteness of العَلْياءِhigh eminence أوor رِفْعَةthe loftiness of القَدْرِrank
You were none other than the sun: through you all people live,
Alas, for the sun, who resembles you?
despite your far-off eminence or exalted rank.
Perfection without flaw, benefit without harm
وهيْهاتَand far from it مَنْanyone who للشّمْسِto the sun منْكِof you بمُشْبِهٍa comparer

Yet far from the mark is anyone who likens you to the sun:
We carried from you a blessed raincloud
perfection without defect, benefit without harm.
Holy rain, generous pouring
حَمَلْناwe carried علىupon الأعْناقِthe necks منْكِof you سَحابةًa cloud
مُبارَكَةَblessed in السُّقْياwatering مقدّسَةَsacred in القَطْرِrain
We carried you upon our necks, a cloud,
And when we came to the grave in the darkness of night
blessed in its watering, sacred in its rain.
We saw the setting of the sun at dawn's break
ولمّاand when أتيْناwe came to اللّحْدَthe burial niche فيin غلَسِthe gloom of الدُّجىnight-darkness

And when we came to the grave in the gloom of night,
If only a grave became for people a place of pilgrimage
we saw the sun's setting at the break of dawn.
We would make our prayers facing that grave
فلَوْso if أنّthat قبْراًa grave صارَbecame للنّاسِfor people قِبْلَةًa direction of prayer

If a grave could become people's direction of prayer,
If people found a way to the soil
we would set our place of prayer facing that grave.
That contained your covered grave of merit and righteous deeds
ولوْand if وجَدَfound الخَلْقُhumankind السّبيلَthe way لتُرْبَةٍto a burial place

And if people could find a way to the burial ground
They would circle it seven times, yearn and pilgrimage
that held your grave, enfolded in virtue and goodness,
And through it attain reward and recompense
لَطافواthey would circle بِهاaround it سبْعاًseven times ولبّواand chant the pilgrimage response وأحْرَمواand enter pilgrimage consecration

they would circle it seven times, chant the pilgrimage response, and enter the sacred state of pilgrimage,
And the resolve of Joseph, descendant
and thus win recompense and reward there.
Of your pure, just, generous lineage intervened
وذادَتْand warded off عنِfrom العَلْياءِhigh eminence عزْمَةُthe resolve of يوسُفٍYusuf
سَليلِthe scion of عُلاكَyour eminence الطّاهِرِpure المَلِكِthe king البِرِّrighteous
And Yusuf's resolve defended high eminence—
But it is a judgment from God, welling forth
the pure scion of your greatness, the righteous king.
To be met with acceptance, patience, and gratitude
ولكنّهُbut it is حُكْمٌa decree منَfrom اللهِGod نابعٌissuing forth

But this is a decree issuing from God,
And below you is a servant, mourning your kingdom
to be met with submission, patience, and gratitude.
Praise, as the breeze stirs the flowers
ودونَكِand accept منْfrom عبْدٍa servant لمُلْكِكِfor your reign نادِبٍmourning
ثَناءًpraise كماas هبّblew النّسيمُthe breeze علىover الزّهْرِthe flowers
Accept, from a servant who mourns your reign,
If it were in my capacity, I would have reached in praise
praise like the breeze that blows upon the flowers.
What your mighty status deserves, not what my capacity deserves
ولوْand if كانthere were فيwithin وُسْعيmy power غَناءٌuseful service بلَغْتُهُI would accomplish it

And if any service were within my power, I would render it,
By God, I have not fulfilled your rightful due
according to what your immense worth demands, not my own.
But it is something by which I establish my excuse
وواللّهِand by God ماnot وفّيْتُI fulfilled حقَّكِyour due واجِباًas required
ولكنّهُbut it is شيءٌsomething أقَمْتُI established بهِwith it عُذْريmy excuse
And by God, I have not rendered you your rightful due,
but it is something by which I have offered my excuse.
