بَعُدْناwe have grown distant وإنْeven though جاوَرَتْناhave stood beside us البُيوتْthe houses
وجِئْناand we have come بوَعْظٍwith admonition ونَحْنُwhile we صُموتْsilent
We have grown distant, though the houses stand beside us.
And we have come with admonition, though we are silent.
وأنْفاسُناand our breaths سَكَتَتْfell silent دَفْعَةًall at once
كَجَهْرِlike the audible recitation of الصّلاةِthe prayer تَلاهُfollowed it القُنوتْreverent silence
And our breaths fell silent all at once,
like a prayer's audible recitation followed by reverent silence.
وكُنّاand we were عِظاماًgreat فصِرْناthen we became عِظاماًbones
وكُنّاand we were نَقوتُwe provide sustenance فَهاso behold نحْنُwe قوتْfood
And we were great, then became bones;
and we once fed others; behold, now we are food.
وكناand we were شموسsuns سماءthe sky of العُلاglory
غربنthey set فناحتand so wailed عليهاover them البيوتthe houses
And we were suns in the sky of glory;
they set, and the houses wailed over them.
فكمْfor how often جَدّلَتْfelled ذاthe wielder of الحُسامِthe sharp sword الظُّبىthe sword-edges
وذاand the possessor of البَخْتِgood fortune كمhow often خَذلَتْهُforsook him البُخوتْfortunes
For how often have sword-edges felled the sword's wielder,
and how often have fortunes forsaken the fortunate!
وكمْand how often سِيقَwas borne للقَبْرِto the grave فيin خِرْقَةٍa rag
فَتىًa youth مُلِئَتْwere filled منْwith كُساهُhis garments التّخوتْthe clothes chests
And how often was borne to the grave in a rag
a youth whose garments had filled chests!
فقُلْso say للعِداto the foes ذَهَبَhas gone ابْنُIbn (son of) الخَطيبِal-Khatib
وفاتَand passed away ومَنْand who ذاthis one الذيwho لاdoes not يَفوتْpass away
So tell the foes: Ibn al-Khatib has gone
and passed away—and who is there who does not pass away?
فمَنْso whoever كانَwas يَفرَحُrejoicing منْكُمْamong you لهُat his passing
فقُلْthen say يَفْرَحُmay rejoice اليومَtoday منْwhoever لاnever يَموتْdies
So if any of you rejoices at his passing,
then say: Let whoever never dies rejoice today.
