عَجِبَmarveled الأَمِيرُthe prince لِجُرْأَتِيat my boldness يَوْمَon the day of الْوَغَىbattle
فَأَجَبْتُهُso I answered him وَجَلَبْتُand I brought شَاهِدَproof of حُبِّهْlove for him
The prince marveled at my boldness on the day of battle.
The prince wondered at my boldness on the day of battle
So I answered him and offered proof of my love for him:
So I answered him and brought witness of his love
لِمَwhy لاَnot يَكُونُbe اللَّيْثُthe lion وَالنَّقْدُand the small sheep الْعِدَىthe enemies
مَنْthe one who كُنْتَyou were أَنْتَyou مُصَوَّراًportrayed فِيin قَلْبِهِhis heart
Why should he not be a lion, and his foes mere sheep—
Why should not the lion and the gold be the enemy
the man in whose heart you are portrayed?
Whoever you were depicted in his heart
