The horizon's stars spent the night beneath your eminence,

and the world adorned itself with some of your ornaments.

    قَدْ كَانَ أَصْبَحَ مَائِلاً لَوْلاَكَا

    And religion—God's religion—you are its pillar;

it would already have leaned askew but for you.

Your age has caused every bygone era to be forgotten

in beauty, and your renown has devalued kings.

So when they aspire to the summit of your glory,

falling short is, for them, attainment.

Your achievements effaced all other achievements when

they were strung as necklaces upon glory's breast.

A nobility that drags its train across the Milky Way

has reached the sky and jostled the celestial spheres.

And generosity like pouring rain, except that it

    knows neither drought nor withholding.

And virtues like a garden that rain has tended

at intervals, and spring has embroidered and woven.

And sound judgment—if some of its gravity

were in the wind, it would not move at all.

If battle's day struck terror with its scowl,

your brow in war was all smiles.

Who could make rain match your palm's bounty, should it pour?

Who could make the racing steeds surpass your reach?

Largesse and a sword are contained within a palm

that guarantees humankind both life and destruction.

You spared no effort in guarding your subjects,

and were mindful, in their care, of the One who entrusted them to you.

Though your well-defended dwelling is outwardly inaccessible,

yet their bosoms and hearts are your dwelling.

Talk of your eminence is sweet to their ears,

and mention of you tastes sweet in their mouths.

No garden whose daisies' mouths laugh

with joy, greeted by rain that feigns weeping,

where the following shower arrives, and the east wind seals

a marriage between the clouds and the garden,

where doves spend the night singing to it, and it sways

in joy while clouds water it in swift succession,

and whose wind you would take for a deep-water fisherman,

casting nets across the surface of the pool,

is more fragrant in breath than the perfume of praising you,

whenever we turn our speech toward your praise.

How many a seeker has exhausted his mount on the way to you,

pillowing his head on its saddle and saddle-cushion.

Seeing confirmed for him the truth of what he had heard,

then he found the reports paltry when he saw you.

Let the Romans not be deceived, amid their reprieve,

by a turn of fate: war is give and take.

And final triumph is your kingdom's; sufficient support for you is

that God is the enemy of whoever opposes you.

God be praised for Yusuf, an imam of guidance,

who dispelled deep darkness with the light of his certainty.

Lords among the sons of Nasr are his forebears,

who guarded the people and destroyed idolatry.

So you see them, on a day of raging battle,

as lions, and in their solitude as ascetics.

They were angels when deep darkness fell,

and kings when the thrones were made ready.

Nasr's sons, the house of Sa'd, championed

the best of all mankind—and what could make you know his worth!

My lord, take it as an embroidered robe,

beautiful, presented to you by your eminence's servant.

Its rhymes strayed and became wayward

from me; the tongue coaxed them and chewed them over.

And despite their reluctance, when I called them

to praise you, they poured swiftly upon me.

This—and how many ties I have through service,

whose claims are never neglected—far be that from you!

Joy to you on Eid al-Fitr, the happiest visitor,

who hastened his night journey, longing to meet you.

And the month wished that its stay might be prolonged,

in its passion for your affection and its clinging fast.

You gave its fasting and its night prayers their due,

at a station of sincerity occupied by none but you.

And enjoy a lasting kingdom that never ends,

and live forever as glory's pillar and mainstay.

For if the world were allowed to choose what it seeks,

the world would hope for nothing but your enduring life.
