The courtyards of your house are resting places for guests.

And the traveler is guided by the light of your hospitality’s fire.

And your freely offered bounty has embraced all people,

every one; and none shares in your excellence.

Tell the one who said, “Existence has folded away,

and valor has no deadly sword,

and generosity has no rain-pouring cloud,

and glory has no sharp crest”:

He has united gentleness, frailty, and generosity,

    valor and sound judgment—a blessing

to religion, this world, and lofty virtues,

and to generosity when the rain-spilling cloud is miserly.

    فِي الْفَضْلِ وَالتَّقْوَى الْفُضَيْلُ وَمَالِك

    In the tumult of battle, he is Rabi‘a ibn Mukaddam;

in virtue and piety, al-Fudayl and Malik.

He inherited majesty from his father and grandfather,

so it is as though none of their dead had vanished.

Thus his steeds are mounts for the hopeful,

and his tents are couches for those who seek him.

So when lofty honors are brought into bondage,

their necks are his by right: he is the master.

O knight of the Arabs, whose house serves as

their sanctuary, where they make pilgrimage and perform sacred rites.

O you whose visitors proclaim good tidings with your name,

so they have pathways and roads leading to you.

    وَسِوَاكَ فِيهِ مَآخِذُ وَمَتَارِكُ

    You are the one in whom I have reserved all my delight;

while others have faults and grounds for rejection.

May you ever remain a light whose radiance guides

anyone whom terror’s pitch-black night has shrouded.

And a fragrant greeting of mine is reserved for your glory,

like musk that a perfumer has ground into precious scents.
