فشَفَى لَواعِجَ قَلْبي المُهْتاجِ
The breeze blew, perfumed with fragrance,
The gentle breeze carries fragrant aromas,
and soothed the burning pangs of my troubled heart.
Healing the turmoil in my restless heart.

It came, speaking of my loved ones, whom
It brings tidings of my beloved friends,
I now mention by allusion and in riddles.
Though I've grown silent, still longing for them.
فاشْرَبْso drink علَىin ذِكْرِremembrance الحَبيبِthe beloved وسَقِّنيand give me drink

صَهْباءَ تُشْرِقُ في الظّلامِ الدّاجِي
So drink in remembrance of the beloved, and give me
Drink to the memory of the beloved, and pour me
tawny wine that shines in the pitch-dark gloom,
A draft to illuminate the engulfing darkness.

فَغَداso he began يُخاطِبُaddressing نَفْسَهُhimself ويُناجِيand communing privately
فَغَدا يُخاطِبُ نَفْسَهُ ويُناجِي
And it showed him all things as one single thing,
It showed all things as one,
so he began addressing himself and communing in secret.
So he began conversing with his soul.

And Ibn Adham saw a glimpse of its light
And ibn Adham glimpsed an instant of its light,
gleaming among mountain clefts and passes.
Gleaming amid ruins and ravines.

واعْتاضَهُ مِنْ لِبْسَةِ الدِّيباجِ
So his inner garment came to be of the wool of purity,
So his creed became the wool of purity,
and he adopted it in place of brocade attire.
His cloak embroidered with gold brocade.

They raised a firebrand for it beside their mount,
Beside their monastery they held up a torch,
so I groped toward its blazing lamp.
So I turned toward its flaring blaze.

And I sought it, a wine that has never ceased
I searched for a wine that still
to be the means of salvation for a seeker or one who hopes.
Offers hope and healing for the seeker.

When I learned its place and its time,
When I learned its time and place,
I pressed on with my night journey through the darkness.
I walked by night with hidden purpose.

And I came to the monastery's master in his sanctuary,
I came to the monastery's sheikh in his shrine,
and confided to him my destitution and my needs.
Laying bare my poverty, voicing my need.

I have none but you; do not thwart my aim.
None but You, so do not deny my quest.
No hopeful servant's hope in you has failed.
No servant's hope in You has gone unmet.

I have come from a land a long journey away,
From a distant land my steps stretched out
after much stumbling and stubborn persistence.
After much stumbling and distress.

Whenever I am exposed to the sun, your love's shade is my refuge,
Whatever I sacrificed, Your love remained my shelter,
and whenever I fall ill, my cure lies in your hands.
And when sick, in Your hand was my cure.

And I stretched out poverty's palm, beseeching him—oh,
I extended the palm of poverty to ask,
the might of the rich and the abasement of the needy!
O Splendor of the wealthy, Disgrace of the destitute!
فرأَىso he saw افتِقارِيmy need فيin يديْهِhis hands فَجادَthen gave generously ليto me

Then he saw my need in his hands and gave me,
He saw my need and generously opened his hand
from his bounty, a torrential downpour.
To shower me with cascading gifts.

And he lodged me upon a height in his monastery,
He lodged me in a cloister on a hillside
below which the bright stars in the constellations sink.
Where stars rain down into the towers.

And he unveiled the wine before me in its cups,
The wine wafted over me in its cups
so I drank it pure, without admixture.
And I drank it pure, without mixing.

Unknowable to the mind, yet
its radiance guides the wine-mixers' palms.
Its ease reveals the pleasure it brings.

Thus you see its glass without wine,
You see its flasks though they contain no wine,
and you see its wine without glass.
And see the wine though there are no flasks.

He held it out to me saying, "This
in which you bestowed its goodness upon al-Nassaj.
Is where you'll find the Vintner's bounty."

"Drink, and cry out my name openly, fear no
hardship or constraint in the monastery.
Persecution or shame in the monastery."

"My friend, I see no friend but You
but myself, with whom I share love and commune.
To whom I give my love and confide my secrets."

Turn aside, you two, to the ruins of existence, and convey
"Turn to the ruins of existence and convey
my greeting, for it is no time to turn back.
Greetings from me in the days of tribulation."

have followed the path whose course is clear,
Have walked the clear, guided path."

Of upheaval, their gowns rent and frayed."

Hidden by every deceiver and fraud."

the pilgrims' mounts had arrived at the station.
The cavalry of pilgrims had come."

Through him God revived the traces of their path,
"God revived the customs of their path
and protected them with a fence of his dominion.
And protected them in His sanctuary."

Their light, taking their lamps as his guide,"

for God, between watchful contemplation and intimate prayer.
Himself to God in contemplation and intimate discourse."

He made learning's landmarks visible after their effacement,
"He revived the forms of knowledge after their extinction,
and restored the face of truth to gladness.
And restored the face of Truth, radiant and joyful."

Becoming a day of dew and a day of tumult."

Raised up by the companion of the night journey."
