    The arrows of death neither stray nor miss.

    And Time has a hand that takes back what it gives.

    And we, though we are upon the swell of worldly life,

    must one day come to rest upon the shore.

    And alike are poverty's humiliation and wealth's honor,

    and whoever hastens at a swift pace and whoever goes slowly.

    فَلَمْ يُغْنِ رَبُّ السَّيْفِ عَنْ رَبَّةِ الْقُرْطِ

    All who come to drink are equal at death's watering place;

    so the lord of the sword could not protect the lady of the earring.
