Tell al-Ashuni, and do not be shy,

the words of a man pleading the truth:

O you whom God [apparently intended] fashioned, when He fashioned you,

from pure hail and from snow,

and pomegranate rind and alum, and from

sukk paste and unripe, astringent gallnuts.

Your make-up is camphor, beyond doubt,

and your threadbare mind is made of henbane.

And your cold utterance, my master,

comes from a freezing blast that blew through a mountain pass,

wrapped around a meaning feeble in strength,

like a cat's turd wrapped in putrid matter.

I marvel at your wife: how is it

she has not cried for help with colic brought on by you?

How is it her opponent has not withdrawn

    paralyzed by you, without victory?

How is it her private chamber has not been assailed

by numbness from dwelling with snow?

I suppose she has ground pepper,

for that grinding is what saves her.

    ومَنْ لِذاكَ الوَجْهِ بالوَجِّ

    She blended it with sweet flag and with mustard;

and who can procure sweet flag for that face?

How fares one beside the east wind you give off,

when the cold debilitates and its harm brings sorrow?

So no mouth labors to utter a word,

nor does a hand approach the genitals.

And if you yearn for a wife,

a second one, enough for you as a spouse is

January's old crone; with her you may make do.

She comes to you among the winds, in a throng.

Her shivering sets your two jaws laughing,

like pebbles laughing where the waves break.

So bring her your fine cloth, after

you have put it, for mischief, in a drawer.

And carry her separation and the chill of kidneys,

two kinds, in a chest and in a saddlebag.

And spend the night with her where the dew falls,

in a cloak or a length of Barji cloth.

And if you wish to wash, measure out for it

vinegar, and cleanse your private parts with cucumber.

And mix with mamitha and nightshade berries

    a thoroughly blended aromatic preparation.

And build an upper room in the wind's mountain pass,

to which you resort in fear of turmoil.

And dispense with a shop by using snow's cotton,

which spares you gathering and ginning.

And spin it with the wind, and prepare for it

a loom for polished cloth and kanj.

And Sinn and Sinnabr—make the two

a feast like that of ritual cries and sacrificial blood.

Forsake stitched clothing, and shave for it,

and circumambulate as people do during the Hajj.

You are nothing but a cold, wayward fellow

from the sphere of the cold ones, at apogee.

Your coarse aloofness, which befell me,

has plunged me into a turmoil of thought.

By my life, nothing like it has befallen me

from the oppression of a Ceutan or a Tangier man.

So ask God's forgiveness, and never blunder in

writing, for all time, or in a scroll.

And do not obey your coldness in anything like it,

except toward a slave of yours or a barbarian.

May you ever remain with a moustache of lettuce,

    and saliva of sour bitter orange;

may January and Capricorn, when allotted,

be your share of month and zodiac sign.

And may you come among a company from your own loins,

of one-eyed children and lame ones,

white and black upon the leather mat of affliction,

as though they were chess pieces.

You would think them Yajuj, circling Dhu al-

    Qarnayn, calling for tribute.

And may a fleshy swelling adorn your neck,

as though it were a knob of citron,

as long as the bitter-cold wind blows anywhere,

and snow mounts upon a meadow.
