so victory appears at the end of the race.
لوif جِئْتُI had come فيinto حلْبَةِthe racecourse العُرْبِof the Arabs التيwho سبقَتْcame before
ماnot كُنْتُwould I have been فيamong القوْمِthe people إلاexcept حائِزَwinning السّبَقِthe prize
Had I entered the racecourse of the Arabs who came before,
I would have been among them only as the winner of the prize.
وإنْand if تأخّرَhas delayed بيme عنْbehind جيلِهمْtheir generation زمَنيmy era
فربّماfor sometimes جاءَcomes معْنىthe essence الصّبْحِof dawn فيamong اللّحَقِthose who follow
Even if my era has held me behind their generation,
dawn’s essence may sometimes appear among latecomers.
والعقْلُand the intellect كالبَحْرِlike the sea إنif هالَتْكَawes you هيبتُهُits majesty
فالشّعْرُthen poetry يسْبُرُplumbs منْهُof it مُنْتَهىthe utmost extent العُمُقِof depth
And intellect is like the sea: if its majesty awes you,
poetry plumbs its utmost depth.
فإنْso if وفّيْتُI have fulfilled بمعنىthe sense المدْحِof praise فهْوَthen it is جَنىthe fruit

If I have fulfilled the meaning of praise, it is the fruit
of a garden watered by your bounty’s pouring clouds.

And if I have fallen short, it is with an excuse I trust:
whoever seeks to count pebbles and raindrops cannot do so.
وإنْand if وفَيْتُI have fulfilled ببَعْضِwith part القوْلِof the words رُبَّتَماperhaps

And if I have fulfilled only part of the telling, perhaps
enough of a necklace is what encircles the neck.
