لمْdid not يَدَعْleave سُقْمُكَyour illness عِنْديin me جَلَداfortitude
Say to Shams al-Din: May you be spared death!
Say to the sun of religion, your time has cured affliction
Your illness has left me no fortitude.
Your sickness has left no endurance in me
رَمِدَتْbecame inflamed عيْنُكَyour eye هذاthis عَجَبٌa wonder
أوَand can…? عيْنُthe eye الشّمسِof the sun تشْكوcomplain of الرّمَداeye inflammation
Your eye has become inflamed—how strange!
Your eye has become bleary, how wondrous!
And can the sun’s eye complain of inflammation?
Or does the eye of the sun complain of bleariness
