Praise be to God, unceasingly, as is due,

for He is the One who veils Himself in the mantle of majesty.

The Hidden, the Manifest, the Truth, beyond the grasp

of the faculties of perception, even when they sought Him deeply.

He whom nothing can comprehend transcends description,

and He who created causation is exalted beyond any cause.

And thanks be to God at the beginning and the end,

and God is the most generous giver and bestower.

Then blessings upon the manifest Light, and upon him whose

signs left no room for falsehood or lies.

Muhammad, the best of those whose intercession is hoped for

tomorrow, when each person is recompensed for what he earned.

Possessor of miracles whose proofs shone forth,

so the people beheld a marvel among his signs.

And no miracle is like the Book of God,

enduring through time, even if time turns away and departs.

May the One who gave him the light of guidance bless him,

as long as the east wind blows after the south wind.

Then may favor rest upon Abu Bakr and Umar,

two full moons chosen for the faith after him.

And next, Uthman, possessor of the two lights, their third,

who won glory both inherited and earned.

And upon Ali, father of the two grandsons, their fourth,

the Prophet's sword, which never failed when he swung it.

And the rest of the noble family and companions, for they

have resembled shooting stars in the sky of the faith.

And next, his most favored Helpers, for theirs are

virtues beyond anyone's power to count or reckon.

They sheltered him amid fear when he came to their home,

and fought those who defied his faith and refused it.

And from the Banu Nasr they left, to support him,

successors who maintained the bond after him.

And none is like Yusuf, our lord, whose

deeds were noble, and his sons, the distinguished lords.

Now, after these words I have set forth,

words of truth with which writers and speakers begin,

I have indeed traversed an expanse of lofty virtues,

where I sent the steeds of thought coursing, tracing my lineage.

An emirate in whose pavilion Nasr has become

a pillar of glory, while we were the tent ropes around him.

Within it I followed the path of the imam, my father,

and often has a noble son resembled his father.

So the first thing I undertook in my youth,

after I had gathered virtue and learning,

    was to make the Book of God my mainstay;

the soul knows no weariness in learning it.

It is as though, whenever I repeat it with my mouth,

I inhale musk or taste white honey.

Until I gained a portion of it, which I master

by heart; and through it God made my wish attainable.

And soon, by God's power, I shall complete it,

for the seeker may attain his goals.

So may God reward the emir of the Muslims, my father,

with the best reward, for how many dues are owed to him!

And blessings from him, pouring down, have flooded me,

and formed clouds for me in the sky of kindness.

He called me Qays and named me after my forefather,

Qays ibn Sa'd—behold, how magnificent a lineage through him!

With what gratitude can we repay the full measure of his favor,

even if Sahban or Quss were called upon to do so?

And may God recompense my teachers with His mercy,

and those who helped, and those who dictated, and those who wrote.

And praise be to God at the close, following the opening,

as long as lightning flashes or a rain cloud pours down.
