لَعَلّperhaps خَيالاًa dream-image منْكَfrom you يطْرُقُvisits by night مَضْجَعيmy bed
وإنْand if ضَلّit loses its way يهْدِيهِguides it الأنينُthe moaning لمَوْضِعيto my place
Perhaps a dream-image of you will visit my bed by night;
and if it loses its way, my moaning will guide it to where I lie.
تَصَدّقْgive in charity بهِwith it وابْعَثْهُand send it فيin سِنَةِdrowsiness الكَرىsleep
وماand whatever شِئْتَهُyou wish it منْfrom بعْدِafter ذالكَthat فاصْنَعِthen do
Bestow it as alms, and send it in the drowsiness of sleep;
and after that, do whatever you wish.
وإنْand if عادَit returns فاسْألْهُthen ask it يُجِبْكَit will answer you بِماwith what يَرىit sees
لعلّكperhaps you تَرْثيfeel pity أوْor لعلّكَperhaps you تقنَعُare convinced
And if it returns, ask it: it will answer you with what it sees;
perhaps you will pity me, or perhaps be convinced.
وإلاّand if not فمُنَّthen grant ليto me بأيْسَرِwith the simplest نائِلِfavor
بأنْby allowing that أشْتَكيI lament وجْديmy longing إلَيْكَto you وتَسمَعُand you listen
Otherwise, grant me the simplest favor:
let me lament my longing to you, while you listen.
عرَفْتُI have known الهَوىlove حُلْواًsweet ومُرّاًand bitter مذاقُهُits taste
وماand not صادِقٌone sincere فيin حُبِّهhis love مثلُlike مُدّعيa pretender
I have known love, its taste both sweet and bitter;
and one sincere in his love is not like a pretender.
فماfor not ذُقْتُI have tasted أشْهىsweeter منْthan مُشاهَدَةِbeholding النّوَىseparation
وأعظَمُand more grievous منْthan بيْنِparting الحَبيبِthe beloved المُوَدِّعِbidding farewell
For I have tasted nothing sweeter than the sight of separation,
nor anything more grievous than parting from the beloved who bids farewell.
ولمْand did not أنْسَI forget إذwhen عانَقْتُهاI embraced her لوَداعِناfor our farewell
فخالَطَthen mingled with دُرَّpearls العِقْدِthe necklace جوْهَرُjewels أدْمُعيmy tears
And I have not forgotten when I embraced her as we said farewell,
and the jewels of my tears mingled with the necklace's pearls.
تُمَسِّحُshe wipes باليُمْنىwith the right hand دُموعَtears جفونِهاher eyelids
وتَجعلُand she places يُسْرىthe left hand فوقَupon قلْبٍa heart مُرَوَّعِterrified
She wipes the tears from her eyelids with her right hand,
and lays her left hand upon a frightened heart.
وقالتْand she said دُموعيmy tears واشْتِياقيand my longing وزَفْرَتيand my sigh
شُهودٌwitnesses علىto ماwhat مِنْof غرامِكَpassion for you أدّعيI profess
And she said, "My tears, my longing, and my sigh
are witnesses to the love for you I profess.
فإنْfor if غِبْتَyou are absent غابَdeparts الأنْسُsolace عنّيfrom me بأسْرِهِin its entirety
ومالِيand I have no منْany عيشٍlife إذاif لمْnot تكُنْyou are مَعيwith me
For if you are absent, all solace departs from me,
and I have no life if you are not with me."
ولمّاand when سرَتْshe traveled by night واللّيلُand the night قدْalready مالَwaned وانقَضَىand ended
وأعْجَلَهاand hurried her ضَوْءُthe light الصّباحِthe morning المُلمَّعِgleaming
And when she departed by night, the night having waned and ended,
and the gleaming morning light hurried her,
ولمْand did not تسْتَطِعْshe could ردَّreturn السّلامِthe greeting مَخافةًout of fear
أشارَتْshe signaled بطَرْفٍwith a glance ثمّthen أوْمَتْshe gestured بإصْبَعِwith a finger
and she could not return the greeting out of fear,
she signaled with a glance, then gestured with a finger.
فأيُّthen what اصْطبارpatient endurance لمْnot تُحَلَّwere undone عُقودُهits knots
وأيّand what فؤادٍheart بعْدُafterward لمْnot يتصدّعِshatters
What endurance, then, has not had its knots undone?
And what heart, after that, has not been shattered?
رَعَىmay protect اللهُGod مَنْwhoever يرْعَىkeeps العُهودَthe pledges علىdespite النّوىseparation
فلَسْتَfor you are not تَراهُseeing him عنْfrom هَواهُhis love بمُقْلِعِdesisting
May God protect whoever keeps the pledges despite separation;
for you will not see him forsaking his love.
ولاand may not كانَthere be دمْعٌa tear لاnot يُطيعُobey لمَنْto whoever دَعاcalls
وكمْand how much بيْنَbetween عاصٍrebellious فيamong الدّموعِtears وطيّعِand obedient
And may there be no tear that will not obey whoever calls it;
and how far apart are rebellious tears and obedient ones!
أحِبّةَbeloved ones قَلْبيmy heart لاdo not تظنّواyou all think بأنّنيthat I
نسيتُI have forgotten وأفْنَىand extinguished البُعْدُdistance نِيرانَthe fires أضْلُعيmy ribs
Beloveds of my heart, do not think that I
have forgotten and that distance has quenched the fires within my ribs.
علَيْكُمupon you all سَلامُpeace اللهِGod ماas long as هبّتِblows الصَّباthe east wind

وماand as long as لاحَgleams برْقٌlightning فيin أجارِعِsand-flats لعْلَعِLaʿlaʿ
God's peace be upon you as long as the east wind blows,
and as long as lightning gleams in the sand-flats of Laʿlaʿ.
