ياO مَنْyou who أدارَpassed around منfrom الصّبابةِardent longing بَيْنَناamong us

O you who, from ardent longing, passed among us
A cup, with musk wafting from its fragrance,
وأتَىand came برَيْحانِwith the sweet basil of الحَديثِconversation فكلّماso whenever
سمَحَgave freely النّديمُthe boon companion براحِهِof his wine حَيّاهُhe greeted him
And brought the sweet basil of conversation—so whenever
The boon companion freely offered his wine, you greeted him.
أناI لاnot أهيمُam enraptured بذِكْرِby the mention of مَنْone who قتَلَkilled الهَوىlove
لكِنْbut أهيمُam enraptured بذِكْرِby the mention of مَنْone who أحْياهُrevived it
I am not enraptured by the mention of one who killed love,
But I am enraptured by the mention of one who revived it.
