    O you through whom the faith rejoices,

    And to whom one points when perfection is named:

    O Muhammad, the praised, remain in the protection

    Of God, its decree enforced by destiny.

    شمْساً وما غيْرُ العَلاء مَدارُ

    A full moon, with no halo but the caliphate;

    A sun, with no orbit but exalted glory;

    ليْثاً وما غيرُ الظُّبا أظْفارُ

    Life-giving rain, with no cloud but bounty;

    A lion, with no claws but sword-edges.

    Ten hours have passed, dividing

    The host of darkness into what seem tenths.

    They grew sweet at the birth of the best of men, to whose tomb

    Young she-camels are driven, or she-camels ten months pregnant are haltered.

    And night has turned away; behind it are spurred

    Dawn, charging at the darkness, and daylight.

    Before it the bright stars withered, though often

    Their blossoms had been fragrant in its presence.

    Daybreak charges upon twilight for a wise purpose

    That lies hidden—and it is a matter with secrets beneath it.

    And the whole, with all it holds, obeys

    God, for He is the One, the All-Subduing.
