O star of ill omen, near at hand across the ages!

That tail has brought war and ruin.

When we saw you, we confirmed what they had described

To people—calamities recorded in the books—

As the poet of Ṭayyiʾ said in his ode—

He, an authority in learning and in letters:

“And they frightened the people with a dark calamity,

Should the western star with a tail appear.”
