ابعَثْsend بسَهْمٍwith an arrow منfrom أبِيAbu (father of) العبّاسِal-Abbas
O peerless one in eminence, beyond all doubt,
O Exalted One without garb,
Send an arrow from Abu al-Abbas.
Send forth an arrow from Abi al-Abbas,
واعْلَمْand know بأنّيthat I لاnot أقلِّدُI follow مذْهَبيmy doctrine
سُفْيانَSufyan يوْماًfor a day خِيفَةَfor fear of الوَسْواسِwhispering doubts
And know that in my doctrine I do not follow
And know that I do not blindly follow
Sufyan even for a day, for fear of whispering doubts.
Sufyan one day out of anxiety's whispering.
ولجَدِّand to the grandfather of مَنْthe one who شرَحexpounded الكِتابَthe book تَحيُّزيmy allegiance
هَذاthis إذاwhen اخْتلَفَdiffers انْتِماءُaffiliation النّاسِthe people
And my allegiance is to the grandfather of him who expounded the book—
And for the zeal of the one who explained the Book I am biased
This is my stance when people's affiliations differ.
If the people's affiliations differ.
فابْعَثْso send بهِwith it طيّاًfolded up بكُلِّwith all خفِيّةٍsecrecy
كالطّيْفِlike a phantom فيin جُنْحِthe cover of الظّلامِdarkness الغاسيdarkening
So send it folded up, in complete secrecy,
So send him flying with every secret
Like a phantom under cover of gathering darkness,
Like a specter in the wing of the deep night,
كيْso that لاnot يُنازِعhe contends فيهِover it غيْرَnot مُقَصّرٍremiss

جاريmy neighbor أبوAbu (father of) عبدِAbd (servant of) الإلاهِal-Ilah (God) الفاسيal-Fasi (of Fez)
Lest he contend for it, sparing no effort—
Lest one unmindful contend with him,
My neighbor Abu Abd al-Ilah al-Fasi.
My neighbor Abu Abdillah al-Fasi.
ومنَand among العَجائِبِthe wonders أنْthat أكونَI should be وإنّنيthough indeed I
إنْif قِسْتُI reasoned by analogy أمْراًa matter صحّproved sound فيهِin it قِياسيmy analogy
And it is a wonder that I should—although
And of wonders is that I, however much
Whenever I judge a matter by analogy, my analogy proves sound—
If I determine a matter sound in my reckoning,
خالَفْتُI went against مُعْتادَthe customary practice of الرّماةِthe archers بفِعْلَتيby my deed
فبَعْثْتُso I sent نحْوَtoward السّهْمِthe arrow بالقِرْطاسِwith the paper target
Have gone against the archers' customary practice by my deed,
I oppose the accustomed shooters in my deed,
And so sent the paper target toward the arrow.
So I sent toward the arrow the parchment.
