O lamp of beauty, O son of Siraj,

O crescent in the most auspicious of zodiac signs!

Whenever I tried to forget you a little,

longing made me retrace my steps.

You are my sun; whenever it vanishes from me,

then my day is like deep darkness.

    فادّرِكْني فَفي يَدَيْكَ عِلاجي

    O languid-eyed one, you have sickened my heart;

so rescue me: in your hands lies my cure.

Are those eyelids you turn, or cups

filled to the brim for love, undiluted?

They deceive people with languor, for in them dwell

the piety of Bishr and the might of al-Hajjaj.

O gazelle who raided the lands of foes

and wheeled the steeds beneath the swirling dust,

    لكَ يا عَنْتَرَ الصُّفوفِ أُناجي

    to you, O rider of steeds, I call;

to you, O Antar of the ranks, I confide.

Brandish from your flanks a supple spear of Khatt,

with slender stature and a well-knit frame.

And draw the sword from your glances: you will cleave

every double-layered coat of mail in the fray.

O my reproacher, leave me alone, for I

have no need of counsel from you.

Love for one with jewel-like teeth has worn me thin,

whose dusky lips are like Kawthar, whose temperament is delicate.

He kindled fire in my heart—and can one

deny a fire born of a lamp?

And he denied me sweet saliva, so

my eye poured brine upon my cheek.

May God forgive me: I have indeed uttered falsehood,

    with fabricated dispute and argument.

How can I complain of the distance of one who is near?

May God smite my unruliness and obstinacy!

The nights favored me after long delay,

and time straightened after its crooked course.

If you saw me, with the night at its height,

I would say: 'Two secrets in the heart of the darkness.'

We pass the night in closeness and embraces,

and joy and bliss and delight.

Here, take her, with bubbles rising over her—

a graceful maiden crowned with the most wondrous crown.

She nearly flows, cup and all, so clearly

does the skin of glass reveal her body.

I swear by prayer at Arafat

and Mina, where the pilgrims gather:

my heart is captive only to your love,

and hopes only to seize the chance of union with you.
