O chosen one of the All-Merciful, and light that

Made error vanish and God's oneness manifest,

Where glory's ascent came to rest at its utmost height.

Neighbors of God's House, and the Arabs who

Came to sit upon the pinnacles of the stars.

They made swords amulets for their newborn,

And war a wet nurse, and saddles cradles.

And the great man inherited his glory from a great forebear,

And sons inherited that glory from their forefathers.

I have bound my hand to you with the cord of my affection,

Neither weak nor worn nor severed.

And made praising you my means of approach to God,

So, in the abode of bliss, I drank eternal life.

Then, when raging calamities swept in as tempests,

I reached a strong pillar within your sanctuary.

To wreak havoc, you were the refuge I sought.

Coming in delegations on the footing of abasement,

    Ready for the reckoning, bewildered,

    Dreading the promised assembly,

Hoping there, in your presence, for the grace of intercession,

And placing their hope in your praised station.

How splendid the riding camels that crossed toward

The abode of your dust, through lowlands and highlands.

A people whose resolve the caller to guidance stirred,

So they donned piety and traversed the deserts.

Then, when the darkness of night spread its wing,

They lined their eyelids with sleeplessness.

And when day dispelled the darkness, and there rose

From her radiant face the sun-gazelle's neck,

So they bought existence with the extinction of life.

And sheltered beneath hope's outspread shade.

A wilderness of the deep, where the hills became

Broad expanses, and mountainous ships slender forms,

Curved, with winds providing them reins,

And teak their body, and pitch their hides.

They cleave the water's skin, like camels drawing water

From it, and leave a furrow in its cheek.

They sought a tomb whose fragrance breathed sweetly,

And whose soil grew pure with the light of miracles.

They made speech there a hushed prayer,

And there replaced sandals with cheeks.

Bān trees drenched by the teats of tears.

How glorious his noble birth! And single it out

In your remembrance for hallowing and praise.

O night that gifted us the light of guidance,

The best of all creation as a newborn!

And exchanged the flame's scorching blast for extinction.

And a tremor struck Kisra's dwelling,

Shattering its foundations, though it had been loftily built.

May God bless you as long as the east wind wafts

At night, and stirs a swaying, supple bough,

And the doves of the bān trees weep amid their cooing,

With heart-stirring sorrow, and echo their trilling song.
