O breeze of the east upon the leaves,

My heart has been stung—is there a healer with a charm?

The night's departure revived a memory for me,

Which I had been made to forget on the day of parting.

The day of parting came, yet an assault was made

By people, unjustly, upon tender souls.

Ten have elapsed, with a tenth of ten besides,

And their mounts have departed, racing one another.

What a life we spent in it, and what fellowship

Drove the company of joy along—what a course!

The witness to truth is present; not hidden

Is his face, and the conversation flows sweetly.

We have taken off our sandals and taken as our resting place

The gathering's presence, with the beloved as cupbearer.

You passed, O night, as my youth passed,

Your darkness coal-black, your canopy outspread.

Then gray hair came like dawn, when there came

To you this, while that was a herald of parting.

May God accompany a caravan wherever you journey,

From which fragrance has spread across the horizons.

And you wonder, O you bidding companions farewell with gladness

And gratitude, when the reunion will be.

And through the Imam's good fortune, wishes draw near,

And joy is bridled after running away.

May God reunite his company, after a long life,

    In Eden, with everlasting bliss.

Whoever thinks that existence lasts forever

Has no share of good among humankind.
