O Abu Thabit, be steadfast in adversity.
O Abu Thabit, be steadfast in adversity
I seek protection for you, lest your enemy be found gloating.
I implore you not to let your enemy gloat over you

Your fortitude at the loss of Abd al-Aziz is what
Your consolation from Abd al-Aziz is he
befits your dignity, which defies description.
Who befits the dignity that rendered you helpless

For your luxuriant tree has grown tall in its topmost boughs,
Your pastures that were once melodious
And your lofty tree has goodly ground to grow in.
And your land that once flourished beautifully
لقدْindeed هدّshattered أرْكانَthe pillars of الوجودِexistence مُصابُهُthe calamity of his loss

The calamity of his loss has indeed shattered the pillars of existence,
Indeed his affliction shook the pillars of existence
And the grief it brought has made the silent speak.
And made the silent lament out of grief

So there are noble souls whose throats sorrow has bound fast,
So a free soul's grief has stifled her
And breaths that have grown faint with anguish.
And from anguish another soul grew faint

فكيْفَso how نُرَجّيdo we hope أنْto نُصاحِبَkeep company with مائِتاa mortal
Death is a defining feature of the human being;
Death in man is an end to his lifespan
So how can we hope to keep company with a mortal?
How can we expect to befriend the deceased?
وللصّبْرِand to patience أوْلَىmore fitting أنْthat يَكونَshould be رُجوعُناour return
إذاif لَمْnot نَكُنْwe are بالحُزْنِthrough grief نُرْجعُwe bring back فائِتاone who is gone
And it is more fitting that we turn to patience,
Patience deserves that our return be
If we cannot bring back the departed through grief.
If not, we would return in sorrow unsuccessful
