أَفَادَتْyielded وِجْهَتِيmy journey بِنَدَاكَthrough your bounty مَالاًwealth
قَضَىpaid off دَيْنِيmy debt وَأَصْلَحَand improved بَعْضَsome of حَالِيmy circumstances
My journey, through your bounty, brought me wealth
That paid my debt and set some of my affairs right.
وَمَتَّعْتُand I gladdened الْخَوَاطِرَthe thoughts بِانْشِرَاحٍwith joy
وَأَطْرَفْتُand I treated النَّوَاظِرَthe eyes بِاكْتِحَالِwith kohl adornment
And I gladdened my thoughts with joy,
And treated my eyes to kohl.
وَأُبْتُand I returned خَفِيفَlight ظَهْرٍback وَالْمَطَايَاand the mounts
بِجَاهِكِthrough your influence تَشْتَكِيcomplain of ثِقَلَthe weight of الرِّحَالِthe loads
And I returned with a lightened back, while the mounts,
Through your influence, complain of the weight of their loads.
وَشَأْنِيand my pursuit لِلْمَعَالِمِfor the landmarks غَيْرُnot شَانِيdisgracing me
وَحَالِيand my condition بالْمَكَارِمِwith noble favors جِدُّvery حَالِيadorned
And my quest for the landmarks brings me no disgrace,
And my condition is richly adorned with noble favors.
فَحُبُّfor love of عُلاَكَyour eminence إيمَانِيmy faith وَعَقْدِيand my conviction
وَشُكْرُand gratitude for نَدَاكَyour bounty دِينِيmy religion وَانْتِحَالِيand my professed creed
For love of your eminence is my faith and conviction,
And gratitude for your bounty is my religion and professed creed.
كَأَنْas though قَدْindeed صَحَّproved genuine لِلَّهِto God انْقِطَاعِيmy exclusive devotion
بِتَأمِيلِيby my placing hopes in جَنَابَكyour court وَارْتِحَالِيand my journey
As though my devotion to God had proved genuine
By placing my hopes in your court and making my journey.
وَمَاand nothing يَبْقَىendures سِوَىexcept فِعْلٍa deed جَمِيلٍnoble
وَحَالُand the condition of الدَّهْرِtime لاَnot تَبْقَىremains بِحَالِin one state
And nothing endures but a noble deed,
And time's condition never stays the same.
وَكُلُّand every بِدَايَةٍbeginning فَإِلَىthen to انْتِهَاءٍan end
وَكُلُّand every إِقَامَةٍstay فَإِلَىthen to ارْتِحَالِdeparture
And every beginning leads to an end,
And every stay leads to departure.
وَمَنْand whoever سَامَdemanded of الْزَّمَانَtime دَوَامَthe permanence of أَمْرٍa matter
فَقَدْthen indeed وَقَفَset الرَّجَاءَhope عَلَىon الْمُحَالِthe impossible
And whoever demands of time that anything endure
Has surely set his hope on the impossible.
