ألَحْظُكَis it your glance? أمor سَيْفُthe sword of عَمْروʿAmr أُعِيداbrought back
لقَدْindeed جنّدَmustered الحُسْنُbeauty فيكَin you الجُنوداthe armies
Is it your glance, or ʿAmr’s sword brought back?
Do I see you or Amr's sword raised anew?
Beauty has indeed mustered its armies in you.
Beauty has mustered troops in you.
تبدّىappeared مُحيّاكَyour face تحْتَbeneath الدُّجىthe darkness
فخَرّso fell العَواذِلُthe reproaching women طُرّاًall سُجوداprostrate
Your face appeared beneath the darkness,
Your smile appeared from beneath the darkness,
So all the reproaching women fell prostrate.
And the virgins fell down prostrate.
أُناشِدُكَI beseech you اللّهَby God فيconcerning مُغْرَمٍa lovesick man
أحَلْتَyou inflicted عليْهِupon him الجَفاcoldness والصُّدوداand rejection
I beseech you by God for a lovesick man
I implore you by God, for one infatuated,
Upon whom you have inflicted coldness and rejection.
You have imposed estrangement and rejection.
إذاwhen هَطَلَتْpoured down سُحْبُthe clouds أجْفانِهِhis eyelids
نَثَرْنَthey scattered علىupon الخدِّthe cheek دُرّاًpearls فَريداunstrung
When the clouds of his eyelids pour down,
When the clouds of your eyelids rain down,
They scatter unstrung pearls upon his cheek.
They scatter pearls upon your cheek.
فلَوْso if كُنْتَyou were تَقْبَلُaccepting منّيfrom me الرُّشاbribes
لحَلّيْتُI would adorn جِيدَكَyour neck منْهُfrom it عُقوداnecklaces
So if you would accept bribes from me,
If you would accept adornment from me,
I would adorn your neck with necklaces of those pearls.
I would adorn your neck with necklaces.
ولَوَجَدْتَand if you were generous بالقُرْبِwith nearness بعْدَafter النّوىseparation
أعَدْتَyou would remake مُعنّاكَyour tormented lover خَلْقاًa creation جَديداnew
And if you granted nearness after separation,
If after desire, I found intimacy,
You would remake your tormented lover as a new creation.
I would make your affection anew.
فتُدْخِلُنيso you would admit me للرّضىof favor جنّةًa paradise
وتُصْليand you would burn حَسوديmy envier ناراًa fire وَقوداblazing
Thus you would admit me into a paradise of favor,
So you would admit me into a garden of contentment,
And make my envier burn in a blazing fire.
And burn my enviers in fiery flames.
