أِنَّاindeed we إِلَىto اللهِGod وَإِنَّاand indeed we لَهُbelonging to Him
مَاhow أَشْغَلَdistracted الإِنْسَانَman عَنْfrom شَانِهِhis affairs
Indeed we are bound for God, and indeed we are His.
Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return
How distracted man is from his own affairs!
How preoccupied man becomes from his own status
يَرْتَاحُdelights لِلأَثْوَابِin the garments يُزْهَىis proud بِهَاof them
وَالْخَيْطُand the thread مَعْزُولٌset aside لأَكْفَانِهِfor his shrouds
He delights in garments, taking pride in them,
He finds comfort in clothes with which he is adorned
While the thread is set aside for his shrouds.
Yet the shroud's thread remains separated for his burial
وَيَخْزُنُand he hoards الفَلْسَthe coin لِوَارِثِهِfor his heir
مُسْتَنْفِداًexhausting مَبْلَغَthe full measure of أَكْوَانِهِhis states of being
And he hoards the coin for his heir,
He hoards money for his inheritor
Exhausting the full measure of his existence.
Exhausting the extent of his goblets
قَوَّضْdismantle عَنِaway from الْفَانِيthe perishable رِحَالَthe camp of امْرِىءٍa man
مَدَّdirected إِلَيْهِtoward it عَيْنَthe eye of عِرْفَانِهِhis understanding
Strike and remove a man's camp from the fleeting world—
He neglected the transient life of a man
One who has turned toward it the eye of his understanding.
And turned to Him his eye of knowledge
مَاnot ثَمَّthere إِلاَّexcept مَوْقِفٌa place of judgment رَاهِنٌabiding
قَدْindeed وُكِلِhas been entrusted العَدْلُjustice بِمِيرَانِهِto its scales (likely a typo)
There is nothing there but an abiding place of judgment,
There remains nothing but the present stance
Where justice has indeed been entrusted to its scales:
Justice has been entrusted with its measuring
مُفَرِّطٌa negligent person يَشقَىsuffers بِتَفْرِيطِهِfor his negligence
وَمُحْسِنٌand one who does good يُجْزَىis rewarded بِإِحْسَانِهِfor his good deeds
A negligent man suffers for his negligence,
A neglectful one suffers for his neglect
And one who does good is rewarded for his good deeds.
While a good-doer is rewarded for his goodness
