قدْ كُنْتُ أُجْهِدُ في التِماسِ صَنيعَةٍ

قدْ كُنْتُ أُجْهِدُ في التِماسِ صَنيعَةٍ

نَفْساً شِهابُ ذَكائِها وقّادُ

نَفْساً شِهابُ ذَكائِها وقّادُ

In seeking a favor, I had been taxing

I used to make every effort to find a friend

a soul whose flame of intelligence burns bright.

Whose brilliant mind leads like a shooting star

وأقولُ لوْ كانَ المخاطَبُ غيْرَكُمْ

وأقولُ لوْ كانَ المخاطَبُ غيْرَكُمْ

عنْدَ الشّدائِدِ تذْهَبُ الأحْقادُ

عنْدَ الشّدائِدِ تذْهَبُ الأحْقادُ

And I say: were the addressee someone other than you,

And I would say, if it were someone other than you

in adversity, grudges fade away.

In times of hardship, hatreds disappear
