If you deny what my ribs conceal

Of burning passion, then ask my tears as witnesses.

I took my stand at al-Muhassab after you,

Calling upon solace, which cannot hear.

Alas for the days at the bend of the sanctuary,

The abode of joy and my gathered companionship.

They said, "When did those depart who left behind

The fire of anguish in your shattered heart?"

I answered them: They saddled the riding camels late at night,

And carried the moons away beneath a span of night.

And traveled by night: sleep became the month of Muharram ('forbidden'),

And the eyelids' showers the month of Rabi' ('spring').

    They charged a watchman—what a watchman!—with guarding the pledge,

And entrusted the secrets to one who would not divulge them.

So whenever I leaned toward forgetfulness, seeking relief,

    Acquired habit overcame innate disposition.

O you who clothe me in the garment of sickness and leave me

Between burning thirst and the heat of my ribs,

Treat me with the kindness you have accustomed me to, and with

Mercy, and do not regard my ill conduct.

And show me tenderness, and be generous with the slightest gift:

What is little from you becomes much, given my contentment.

You awakened my dormant sigh when you slept,

And denied my eyelids the sweetness of slumber.

And I set my eye to watch al-Faraqid and al-Suha,

I weep for you at their setting and rising.

So the star in the heart of the sky is my companion through the night,

And sickness, amid my restless tossing in bed, is my bedfellow.

I stripped off the garment of patience, distraught with love for you,

And donned the garment of my coquetry and submission.

    يأتيكَ بالمَخْفوضِ والمَرْفوعِ

    Ask the grammar of my flowing tear or my sigh;

It will bring you the lowered (genitive) and the raised (nominative).

And ask it about my passion; it will answer you at once:

"This is an inference, not to be dismissed."

You tormented me and exposed my body to wasting sickness,

And denied me what is not forbidden.

If my sin is that I am enamored of you,

Passion-stricken at heart, then it is no time to turn back.
