إنْif كانتِwas الجنّةُParadise موْجودَةٌin existence
إنْ كانتِ الجنّةُ موْجودَةٌ
فيon الأرضِthe earth قُلْناwe would say جنّةُthe garden of الزّاويَةْal-Zawiya
في الأرضِ قُلْنا جنّةُ الزّاويَةْ
If Paradise existed
If Paradise exists
on earth, we would say: the Garden of al-Zāwiya.
on earth, we would say it is the garden of al-Zawiya.
ياO بُقْعَةًplot of land فازَtriumphed بِهاthrough it المُشْتَريthe buyer
يا بُقْعَةً فازَ بِها المُشْتَري
فأمُّso the mother of مَنْwhoever خلّفَهاleft it behind هاوِيَهْthe Abyss
فأمُّ مَنْ خلّفَها هاوِيَهْ
O little plot of earth—fortunate is the one who buys you;
O plot of land whose buyer has triumphed!
but whoever leaves you behind—his abode is the Abyss.
So the Abyss is mother to whoever leaves it behind.
