أَقُولُI say لِعَاذِلِيto my reproacher لَمَّاwhen نَهَانِيhe forbade me
وَقَدand had وَجَدَhe found المَقَالةthe argument إِذْwhen جَفَانِيhe shunned me
I say to my reproacher when he forbade me,
And had found grounds for reproach when he shunned me:
عَلِمْتَyou knew بِأَنَّهُthat he مُرَّbitter التَّجَنِّيunjust reproach
وَفَاتَكَand it escaped you أَنَّهُthat he حُلْوُsweet اللِّسَانِthe tongue
“You knew that he was bitter in his unjust reproaches,
But it escaped you that he was sweet of tongue.”
