قَعَدْتُI sat down لتَذْكيرٍto admonish ولوْand if كُنْتُI had been منْصِفاًfair
لذكّرتُI would have admonished نفْسيmy soul فهْيَfor it أحْوَجُmore in need للذِّكْرىof admonition
I sat down to admonish; yet, had I been fair,
I would have admonished my own soul, for it has greater need of admonition.
إذاif لمْnot يكُنْthere be منّيfrom me لنَفْسيَfor my soul واعِظٌan admonisher
فياthen, oh لَيْتَwould that شِعْريmy knowledge كيفَhow تَفْعَلُit acts فيupon أخرىanother soul
If no admonisher comes from me for my own soul,
Then how, I wonder, could it work upon another soul?
