هَمَمْتُI intended لأَنْto أُقَبِّلَهاkiss her بِشَيْبِيwith my gray hair
فَأَبْدَتْso she showed عِنْدَat ذَاthis سِمَةَa sign of الْقُنُوطِdespair
I meant to kiss her, gray-haired as I was;
so at this she showed a sign of despair.
وَقَالَتْand she said لِيto me رَأَيْتُكَI saw you فِيduring حَيَاتِيmy lifetime
جَعَلْتَyou placed بِمَبْسِمِيupon my smiling lips قُطْنَcotton الْحَنُوطِthe burial perfume
And she said to me, 'I have seen you, while I still live,
place cotton scented for burial upon my lips.'
