هَمَمْتُI intended لأَنْin order to أُقَبِّلَهاI kiss her بِشَيْبِيwith my gray hair
فَأَبْدَتْso she showed عِنْدَat ذَاthis سِمَةَa sign الْقُنُوطِdespair
I intended to kiss her, gray-haired as I was;
so at that she showed a sign of despair.
وَقَالَتْand she said لِيto me رَأَيْتُكَI saw you فِيin حَيَاتِيmy life
جَعَلْتَyou placed بِمَبْسِمِيupon my smiling mouth قُطْنَcotton الْحَنُوطِburial perfume
And she said to me, 'While I still live, I have seen you
place perfumed burial cotton upon my smiling mouth.'
